Antiparkinsonian Drugs
Antiparkinsonian drugs are used in treating the
Extrapyramidal Side Effects
(EPS) that are caused by the use of antipsychotic medications. These extrapyramidal effects include:
akinesia (weakness), akathisia (restlessness), dystonic reactions (muscle spasms),
parkinsonism, and
rabbit syndrome. Side effects need to be assessed accurately and treated in an attempt to
minimize
undesired effects and to improve the treatment and health of the patient.
There are many different groups of medications used in the treatment of
these side effects and these include:
- Anticholinergic
- Antihistaminergic
- Dopamine agonist
- Beta adrenergic antagonist
- Alpha adrenergic antagonist
- Benzodiazepine
