Mood Stabilizers

Mood stabilizers are used in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder. Its purpose is to stabilize acute manic, mixed and/or depressive symptoms. It does not induce the alternate mood symptoms (for instance, does not cause a switch from depression into mania or mania into depression and prevents future relapses into manic, mixed, or depressive symptoms or episodes). Mood stabilizers, when required for acute treatment of manic, mixed, and hypomanic episodes, often require several weeks to take effect. During this time other medications including anxiolytics, sedative-hypnotics and antipsychotics may be necessary to assist in the treatment of symptoms of agitation, insomnia and psychosis. Occasionally the addition of an antidepressant is required to manage a severe depression.
